Igala Ocho Festival returns to Charleston!
The Igala Kingdom USA in partnership with Charleston County Public Library, proudly announces the return of the Igala Ocho Festival. This vibrant celebration honors the rich heritage of the Gullah people of Igala Kingdom ancestry, blending traditional African customs with the unique cultural tapestry of the Lowcountry.
The Igala Festival is a tribute to the ancient hunting and pre-planting traditions of the Igala Kingdom, symbolizing renewal and ushering in of a new season. Attendees will experience a day filled with traditional drumming, dancing, storytelling, and ceremonial rituals reflecting the deep-rooted customs of the Gullah-Igala people. The festival also serves as a platform to highlight the historical connections between the Igala and the Gullah communities, emphasizing shared histories and cultural exchanges.

"The Igala Ocho Festival is more than just a celebration; it's a bridge connecting continents, histories, and communities," says Onu Nizar, Gullah interpretive realism painter and Director of the Office of Diaspora Igala Affairs. "We invite everyone to join us in this cultural immersion, fostering a deeper understanding of authentic Gullah cultural thought and behavior."
