SUMMARY:Gallery Night: "Dreamhouse" by Jessie Reyna
DESCRIPTION:Saul Alexander Gallery at Main Library- Come check out August's
gallery artist\, Jessie Reyna\, for their exhibition "Dreamhouse". The
Exhibit will be available to visit from August1st - August 31st.\n\n
\n\nArtist's Statement: After finally watching the much anticipated film
Barbie\, I was struck by the chilling monologue by America Ferrera as she
passionately explains to Barbie the expectations and contradictions of
being a woman in today's society. While dissecting her speech\, this body
of work will dive deep into the color pink in contrast with many other
colors and subjects. This is to explore the perceptions of femininity\, and
reflect on the stigma associated with women embracing their feminine side.
Over the last few years\, I've incorporated a lot of pink into my work\,
and have found that the color itself results in a strong reaction from
viewers\, both positive and negative. For those who express their dislike
for the color\, it is typically described as "too girly"\, which is often
scoffed at and seen as less than\, much like the initial reactions to the
announcement of the movie Barbie. This exhibit will ask all of the
important questions: Why does the color pink have such a harsh audience\,
and why is it not taken seriously? My hope is to reclaim the vibrant color
to show it also represents confidence and power\, and to celebrate
femininity by exploring the world of a Dreamhouse. \n\n\n\nI'm currently a
studio artist at Public Works Art Center in Summerville\, and have
participated in various group exhibitions around the Charleston area. You
can find my work at several locations such as The Station Park Circle\, Two
Cumberland\, Southern Ruetz\, The Charleston City Night Market\, and The
 Paper Canopy.
